Project methodology

Camera deployment

GoPro 7s mounted on 2kg dive weights were place near S. vermicularis aggregations at a distance of approximately 1m. A 50m transect was deployed by a SCUBA diver towing a lift bag with the 4 cameras to be deployed attached placing a camera at 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40m marks. The cameras were then activated and placed near the closest aggregation to the transect line by a second diver and both divers exited the water at the pier. After 2 hours divers re-entered the water and retrieved the cameras for download and analysis.

Video Analysis

The first 10 minutes of video footage captured was discarded as were the final 10 minutes in any video in which the camera was still running when collected by divers. The numbers and type of mobile fauna observed in, on and around the reef were recorded. Where possible individuals were identified to species though groups were used for indeterminate individuals (e.g. Gobius spp, Pomatoschistus spp, or Goby species).
