SUMMARY:Biodiscovery in Irish waters with Dr Ryan Young
DESCRIPTION:With bioprospecting one of the scientific buzzwords of the last few years we’re delighted that Dr Ryan Young of NUI Galway will give a talk on biodiscovery in Irish waters and his work on the Science Foundation Ireland funded program “Exploiting and conserving deep-sea genetic resources”. \nDr Young gained his PhD in marine natural products chemistry from Rhodes University and is currently the senior postdoc on SFI Investigator Programme Award15/IA/3100 Exploiting and conserving deep-sea genetic resources\, responsible for chemical and biological screening \nThe 5-year (2016-2021) Science Foundation Ireland Investigators programme project Exploiting and conserving deep-sea genetic resources focuses on biodiscovery research in Irish deep-sea Cnidaria and Porifera. The aims are to: \n\nfind new bioactive natural products from deep-sea corals and sponges in Irish offshore waters\ndevelop informed bioprospecting approaches to maximise the chance of finding these compounds in hard to sample environments such as the deep sea\ninform conservation planning in relation to biodiscovery hotspots

SUMMARY:Site monitoring in Irish waters (pt 1)
DESCRIPTION:The National Marine Monitoring Scheme uses an informal survey methodology combining the existing Seasearch methodology with a list of bench mark species to be monitored at each site. Sites are selected by participants themselves to facilitate repeat sampling. Abundance is then measured for each species using a simple coded system SCOR (Super-abundant\, Common\, Occasional\, Rare). In order to participate in the scheme divers must: \n1. Choose a site to monitor \n2. Be confident that they can identify the ~100 species recorded in the scheme. These species are common species that can be easily identified visually in the water. \n3. Monitor their site across 5 dives – May\, June\, July\, August and September (divers can also monitor all year round if they wish). \nThis workshop will provide a short introduction to the scheme and cover the identification of the molluscs\, crustaceans and sea squirts recorded as part of the scheme. \nThis will be an online talk held on Zoom to book a place email SeasearchIreland@gmail.com or leave a comment below with your name and email address. \n
